Chancery Lane Office Space

Office space on Chancery Lane refers to workspace located on the one-way street that runs from east to west through London’s Midtown, starting at the western boundary of the City of London, passing through the City of Westminster.

The route originated as New Lane, created by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. It extended from their original temple on the site of the present Southampton Buildings to their newly acquired property to the south of Fleet Street, which would become their new and present temple.

Chancery Lane’s current name dates back to Ralph Neville, who was both Bishop of Chichester and Lord Chancellor of England.

The area around New Lane came into his possession in 1227, when King Henry III granted him land for a palace on the street. The access route to the Chancellor’s palace was named Chancellor Lane and was varied over the centuries to its current form.

Chancery Lane was the location of one of the Inns of Court, Sergeants Inn, which was for Judges and Sergeants-at-law only. However, the society’s relevance diminished as Serjeants-at-Law were gradually superseded by Queen’s Counsel in the nineteenth century.

The area surrounding Chancery Lane remains home to two of the four most important legal societies in London today: Gray’s Inn and Lincoln’s Inn.

Today, Chancery Lane is home to the Law Society of England and Wales, several high-profile legal practices, consulting firms, and ancillary businesses. The street and its immediate vicinity are also home to high-profile occupiers from other sectors. They are the location of the London offices of the multinational engineering and design firm WSP and the British supermarket chain J. Sainsbury.
