Chelsea office space is not the first thing the district is renowned for. Indeed, many first think of its flower show, shops and boutiques along King’s Road, Duke of York Square, and Sloane Street – also home to Michelin-starred restaurants and internationally renowned hotels.

Many also associate it with its football club, which plays at Stamford Bridge, notable past residents, such as Alfred Hitchcock, James Joyce, and Oscar Wilde, or those of the present day through the reality television show set in the district.

However, the district also offers various business accommodation options ranging from co-working studios in Worlds End to serviced office space within the iconic art deco Michelin House on Fulham Road.

Chelsea is located in West London on the north bank of the River Thames. Its name derives from the Old English term ‘Chelceth’, meaning ‘landing place for chalk or limestone’.

It is southwest of Central London and, therefore, part of the southwestern postal area covering the postcodes SW1, SW3, and SW10. It merged with its neighbouring district in 1965 and, for administrative purposes, sits within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC).

Since its early history, it has been an affluent area and was recorded earlier as a ‘village of palaces’. It served London as a market garden until the 19th century, after which it was absorbed into the capital through development. However, its horticultural heritage remains.

One of its best-known buildings is the Chelsea Royal Hospital for Old Soldiers, which Charles II established in 1694. The retirement home and nursing home for former members of the British Army, also known as Chelsea Pensioners, is on Royal Hospital Road.

The beautifully proportioned building designed by Christopher Wren is set on extensive grounds where the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is held annually.

The district is also world-famous for its Physic Gardens, which were established as the Apothecaries’ Garden in London in 1673.

The Grade-I listed four-acre garden is among the oldest botanical gardens in Britain. Its rock garden is the oldest in Europe, devoted to alpine and Mediterranean plants.

The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries initially established the garden on a leased site in the garden of Danvers House.

In 1713, the wealthy Anglo-Irish physician, naturalist, and collector Sir Hans Sloane, after whom Sloane Square and Street are named, purchased the Manor of Chelsea adjacent to Danvers House.

He then leased the land to the Society of Apothecaries for £5 a year in perpetuity. The deed also required the garden supply the Royal Society, of which he was a principal, with ‘50 good herbarium samples per year.’

This initiated the Chelsea Physic Garden, which flourished through a seed exchange programme with Dutch botanists, which is still in place today.

With further military links, Chelsea was home to the Duke of York’s Barracks, established off King’s Road in 1801. This has since been redeveloped to form part of Duke of York Square, which includes shops, cafes, and a weekly farmers’ market. It is also home to The Saatchi Gallery, which opened in 2008.

Chelsea Barracks was located at the end of Lower Sloane Street and Chelsea Bridge Road and was used by two battalions of the Household Division from 1862. The site has since been redeveloped to provide super-prime residences.
