Office space in Green Park refers to business accommodation close to the 40-acre (16-hectare) Royal Park in the City of Westminster, so called because it is the only of eight Royal Parks that has no buildings, no open water, no children’s playgrounds, and relatively few flowers.

The park is situated amid a nearly continuous chain of green spaces in Westminster, which includes St. James’s Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens, This vast combined parkland is generally bounded on the four cardinal compass points by Downing Street the east, Victoria and Belgravia district to the south, Kensington and Notting Hill to the west and St James’s, Mayfair and Bayswater to the north.

Officially titled The Green Park, it was enclosed for the first time and became part of the Poulteney family’s estate in the 16th century. However, in 1668, some of this area was ceded to King Charles II, who renamed it Upper St James’s Park and constructed a brick wall surrounding it.

The charismatic royal created the space because he wanted to walk from Hyde Park to St. James’s Park without leaving royal soil. He fell in love with his new park, taking a daily walk or ‘constitutional’ within it, and this is how Constitution Hill’s name was derived. He also constructed an icehouse in the park to keep his drinks cool during the summer months.

In the 1700s, the park was a large, open meadow with no flowers and very few trees, and was somewhat of an add-on to St. James’s Park. In 1746, the park was officially named The Green Park to differentiate it.

The park was landscaped by John Nash in 1820 and has remained relatively unchanged since.

Although it is known for not having flowers, over 200,000 daffodils bloom each spring; however, it doesn’t feature the formal flower arrangements found in the other Royal Parks.

It is also characterised by having no water. However, the River Tyburn once flowed through the land. Today, the Tyburn stream runs underneath the park, flowing from Hampstead to the Thames. It comes into the parkland from the direction of Mayfair and exits to the west, passing underneath Buckingham Palace.

The Green Park is home to plane trees and some lime, hawthorn, and chestnut trees. These trees benefit the surrounding areas by providing a cooler microclimate during hot summer weather, filtering pollutants, and improving air quality. For this reason, picnickers and sunbathers take advantage of the hireable deckchairs every spring and summer.

Although the park does not contain buildings, it is home to monuments and memorials such as the Canada Memorial in the east and the Bomber Command Memorial in the west of the park. The Memorial Gates also stand at the park, paying tribute to the five million people from India, Africa and the Caribbean who served in two world wars for Britain.

In 2016, one acre of the park near the Bomber Command Memorial was designated as the 90th Coronation Meadow, named The Queen’s Meadow, and established as a wildflower meadow using seed taken from ancient meadows across the country.

The area surrounding the 40 acres of Green Park is home to some of London’s iconic institutions, world-class luxury hotels, and super-prime residential properties.
