Located in today’s EC4 district, The Monument commemorates the fire that started on September 2, 1666. It began east of the memorial in a baker’s house on Pudding Lane.

However, led by Surveyor General to King Charles II, Christopher Wren and his partner Robert Hooke, stone and brick were chosen as the materials for many of the buildings and churches that still stand today, including St Paul’s Cathedral, which was also ravaged by the fire.

One church that was not rebuilt was St Margaret on Fish Street Hill. On the site where it had stood, a monument to commemorate the fire and celebrate the rebuilding of the City of London was chosen to be placed.

Wren and Hooke completed The Monument in 1677. At 202 feet (61 metres) tall, it is said that if it fell to the east, the top would reach the spot on Pudding Lane where the fire began.

The Grade I-listed fluted Doric column is the tallest free-standing stone column in the world. Visitors can climb 311 steps to reach its viewing platform and enjoy 360-degree views over modern London.

A related monument, the Golden Boy of Pye Corner, marks the point near Smithfield where the fire was stopped.

The locale takes its name from the tribute, as does Monument Station, which is in the neighbouring EC3 district of the City, yet is just a short walk away.

It opened in 1884 and was linked with Bank Station as an underground interchange in 1933. The complex underwent a substantial upgrade and expansion that was completed in 2023. With 27 escalators and 10 platforms, it is one of the busiest stations on the London Underground network.
