The history of 41 Lothbury began in 1833 when William Robert Keith Douglas gathered a group of business associates to consider founding a joint stock bank in London. This entity evolved to become the National Westminster (NatWest) Bank and the building became the head office from the 1830s to 1984.

41 Lothbury has always been one of the least unsubtle banking buildings in London, particularly as it is largely hidden behind the imposing walls of the Bank of England. Yet, the striking view of its clean white frontage from Threadneedle Street is one of the most pleasurable architectural surprises as you walk around the City.

The office building, faced with Portland stone, rises six floors from the street and follows the gentle curve of Lothbury. Historically, its main door was enclosed by a pavilion surmounted by a stone shield bearing the Westminster Bank Coat of Arms.

The building was never simply a bank headquarters office, though; at its heart was the banking hall itself where the bank and its customers did business. Significantly, this banking hall is where a customer in 1834 cashed the first cheque drawn on a bank in the City of London.

The building was listed as Grade II* in 1977 for its opulent and little-altered interior, and the listing details features of the property including moulded architraves, marble fireplaces, checkerboard marble floor and bronze lifts.
